What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

It’s a scientifically proven and evidence-based form of treatment. It can help with dizziness, vertigo balance issues, concussion symptoms, headaches, increased sensitivity to lights/noises/movements. These treatments are customized to meet the needs of the individual.

What are Causes of Vestibular Disorders?

  • Aging (although people of all ages can be affected)
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – a very common cause of vertigo involving the vestibular system
  • Concussions/Head Trauma
  • Infections of the vestibular system nerve (vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis)
  • Congenital issues (structural variations in the vestibular system that are present from birth)

What do expect with Vestibular Rehabilitation

  • Upon initial visit, the therapist conducts an assessment of the vestibular system. Testing may include: gaze stability and visual system ability, sensitivity to movements, balance, and gait (walking). In order to assess if BPPV is present, specific tests are conducted. After testing, the therapist customizes treatments to meet the needs of the individual. Treatment may include the following:
    -Gaze stability exercises
    -Visual therapy exercises
    -Balance exercises
    -Movement/Habituation exercises for motion sensitivity
-The Epley maneuver (a sequence of gentle head movements) can usually resolve Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) immediately
